The lobby of the historic Merced Theatre was dressed in holiday bling on Dec. 12 for its “Thank You Party” celebrating its donors, members, staff and volunteers. A beautiful 20 foot tall Christmas tree and blue and gold lighting effects set a festive mood. Music was provided by pianist Gloria Coronas and vocalist Lourdes Clesson.

The biggest announcement for the evening was a $100,000 donation made by Dr. Hanimireddy Lakireddy and his wife Vijaya. He was introduced by the foundation’s largest donor Dr. Art Kamangar.

Dr. Lakireddy is a cardiologist at Dignity Health’s Mercy Medical Center. His humorous talk to the group included naming many who are his patients.

“Merced is my home. I have donated to UC Merced and Merced College. I was feeling badly that I had not donated to Merced Theatre yet. It’s a wonderful place for our community,” Dr. Lakireddy explained to the crowd. “My family is all behind me and supports everything I do. Thanks for letting me do my part for this community.”

The donation will be used for one of the theatre’s next larger projects, such as a sound system upgrade or an electronic component for the marquee. Chairperson Skip George said the Lakireddys would be very involved with whatever project is chosen.

Shows leading off the 2018 season at Merced Theatre include the Celtic Festival’s “Golden Bough” on March 17, Clint Black on April 10 and James Garner’s Tribute to Johnny Cash on April 28.
