It's a dog's life

By John Derby
August 5, 2010

From Ship to Shore by John DerbyDogs have taken a lot of abuse in the past. Remember the term “I live like a dog,” or “Lie like a dog,” but dogs don’t have it so bad. Take our dog “T.S.” for instance.

He is a dachshund and he was supposed to be a mini, but somehow no one told him, so he grew to 28 pounds.

He still thinks he is a mini and likes to lay right on top of you when you are just getting comfortable in your easy chair. Or if you want to take a nap in the afternoon, he is right there in the middle of the couch.

He feels like the bed is his and has the very middle staked out for his nightly repose.
Normally he even goes out on the boat with us and rolls himself into the bean bag behind the dodger for comfort in the roughest seas.

However when there were too many people on the boat during a recent cruise, we left him at the local pet motel.

Now we felt badly about leaving him alone for four days. Yes, even though we were only gone for three days, the pet motel insisted that he most stay an extra day because they don’t allow for pick ups on a Sunday.

So when he arrived for the weekend, we were told that all the regular rooms were taken up and he would have to rent the luxury suite called “The Harley Davidson suite” with all the trimmings.

And as for being left alone for the weekend, he got out of the car and paraded into the pet motel like he owned the place...and he should have for the price.

He winked at a few of the females who were sauntering past and then headed out into the play ground where a half dozen other playmates were waiting for him.

He knew several on a first-name basis and while he usually picks a fight with anyone who dares to run across his yard at home, he is the most perfect of gentlemen at his Harley Davidson suite, inviting unsuspecting young females to join him.

We left knowing he was in good care and when we returned he had a smile on his face and that knowing glance as if to say, “I had a great weekend how was yours?”

And so you can talk about a dog's life...not so bad isn’t it?
