PHOTO ESSAY: Choice & Consequence

LOCKED-IN SALE: An enraged Monica Villa yells at passing cars as she holds a mock yard sale to decry the raising of a fence around Sierra Presbyterian Church. Villa and several others found a safe haven on the church lawn to pitch tents in the aftermath of the Tent City closure. In the spring of 2011, the group was well established at the location. However, numerous homeowners in the area complained that transients were bringing crime and blight to an otherwise nice neighborhood. Meanwhile, the church landlords grew concerned about the viability of the site. Once again another eviction had Villa and friends on the move. Campers were forced to take what they could carry. Human rights lawyers showed up on behalf of the transients, but the belongings left on the grounds were never recovered, according to Villa. (TIMES PHOTO BY JONATHAN WHITAKER)
